Forming part of the fascinating Table Bay Nature Reserve and the perfect activity to feature on any nature lover’s to-do-list while visiting Blouberg for a vacation, the Rietvlei Wetland Reserve is one of the most important nature reserves in the Western Cape.

Situated between Milnerton and Table View, this wetland regularly welcomes visitors to explore its expansive grounds and engage in a myriad of activities, with something to keep everyone entertained and spectacular views of Table Mountain, as fresh ocean air blows in from the Atlantic Ocean nearby.

Covering an incredible 663 hectares of land, Rietvlei is home to over 180 species of birds, from the commonly seen African Fish Eagle, White Pelican and Cape Wagtail to rarer birds that include the Egyptian Goose, South African Shelduck, Hottentots Teak and elusive Black Crane. Of course, thanks to the variation of birds that flock to Rietvlei, it has become a prime spot for bird-watching among locals and visitors alike. The Rietvlei Wetlands also offer bird-seeking visitors the use of a bird-hide that displays the ideal vantage point over the freshwater and reeds, and can comfortably seat up to 20 people.

In the warmer summer months, it is not unpopular for water sport enthusiasts to journey out to the Rietvlei Wetland Reserve to experience activities like wakeboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing and even sailing. This family-friendly reserve is safe and offers visitors secure access at an affordable rate. For those who simply wish to unwind and take in the beautiful surroundings over a good book or a family picnic, the reserve offers braai facilities right by the water’s edge with tables and chairs.
